Meet Matthew

Matthew was three when we enrolled in physical therapy at Theraplay. He was walking at a one year-old level and was very unsteady on his feet. We were still new to the Indianapolis area and unfamiliar with where to turn. Finding Theraplay brought smiles to all our faces.

Matthew's physical improvement was amazing!  Within two months, his teachers were remarking. "Matthew's walking is so much stronger! Look at him go!  His balance is noticeably improved."

Matthew has Down Syndrome, and people with Down Syndrome have low muscle tone throughout their bodies. This can cause them to be overly flexible or "floppy." In Matthew's case, he was struggling in his hips and ankles.

Matthew's trunk and hip stability or his center of gravity have greatly improved because of the work Theraplay has showered our direction. The swaying and falling down became less frequent. He is also feeling a sense of confidence and speed in his walking. We have a hard time keeping up with him!

"Riding horses day," is a big event in our house. Matthew has loved the horses from the start. He can spot a horse a mile away now. Our two year-old, Alice, enjoys our times at TherAplay as well. It is amazing how these animals have blessed our family through our time there.

The therapists, volunteers and staff are very patient and skilled at bringing out Matthew's best. They cheer for his successes and work with Matthew in helping him achieve everyday tasks. It gives us joy to see Matthew receiving positive reinforcement.

Today, Matthew walks up the stairs instead of crawling and can walk down the stairs holding our hand or the rail. He is bright and upright. We thank God for TherAplay and the blessings this organization has given to our family.
