Therapeutic Listening

NEW AT THERAPLAY!

TherAplay’s Occupational Therapists received their certification in Therapeutic Listening in March. Our therapists use this tool with many of our kiddos, finding it particularly helpful with those who have been diagnosed with autism and sensory integration processing disorders. After just one week of using this new tool, we’ve experienced some real Success Stories (click here to learn more)!

Developed by Vital Links, Therapeutic Listening is a research based tool for treating people who have difficulty with processing sensory information, listening, attention, and communication. Music recorded specifically for Therapeutic Listening is altered to exaggerate the sounds that naturally capture attention and tap into parts of the brain involved in regulating bodily functions, relating to others, and organizing behavior.

Nikki's Back!

On March 1st, Nikki, one of our equine staff, participated in her first therapy session since her November accident and subsequent surgery to remove her left eye. For some horses, losing half of their eyesight would require immediate retirement, but not our special girl! Nikki knew that in order to be able to continue helping her kiddo's she would have to handle her special need with calm, dignity and grace - which is exactly what she's done.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing care from Janssen Vet Clinic, the meticulous care from TherAplay's entire barn staff, and those who donated to Nikki's medical expenses. Also, special thanks to Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) Foundation, Inc. for allowing us to designate monies from their grant to put toward Nikki's medical fund.

J.C. Hart Has Heart!

There just aren't enough ways to say thank you to our friends at J.C. Hart Company, Inc. for all their hard work on Wednesday evening. They volunteered their time and expertise to help us with some much needed repairs around our great (but old) barn. Not only did they repair our sprinkler system, replace piping and a door, change filters and install a new spicket for our barn faucet, they also made time for the kiddo's.We are forever indebted! Thank you - Phil, Dave, Tricia, Larry and Jane!

The TherAplay Family Just Keeps on Growing!

Please join us in welcoming Nichole Wilson, the newest member of our Board of Directors. Nichole is the Director of Rehab Services and Sports Medicine for Community Health Network. Named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” in 2011, we are thrilled that Nichole chose to lend her leadership and health services expertise to help drive the direction and further success of TherAplay!

Congratulations to Olya Mangusheva, our newest Occupational Therapist! Olya joined TherAplay in January after graduating with top honors from the University of Indianapolis. In her native Ukraine, Olya organized “World Open to Everyone”, a program which integrated 60 children with special needs into the community through field trips to places of interest and special events. Olya’s passion for helping children with special needs has extended to the United States through her volunteer work at Easter Seals Crossroads and CHAMP Camp…and of course, her latest endeavor as an Occupational Therapist for TherAplay!

Our equine staff extends a “Welcome Aboard” nicker to their newest team member – Marge. Marge comes to us from Select Show Horses in Sheridan, Indiana. Looking for her second career after retiring as a lesson horse, Marge joined the TherAplay staff in February.

Marge has been a quick learner and likes working with the kiddos.
