Upon graduating from Ball State University in 2000, Breinne travelled around the United States for a few years before finally settling in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was there that she began her career in the non-profit world at the Loveland Boys and Girls Club as a Program Coordinator. When she wasn't working or playing in the mountains, she volunteered at a horse ranch, hoping to gain enough knowledge and experience to someday join the equine world. As fate would have it, soon after moving back to Indiana, she was introduced to and fell in love with Children’s TherAplay. 

In January of 2005, Breinne proudly joined the Children’s TherAplay team as the Office Manager. She has since become our Administrative Manager and Event Coordinator.

Diane joined the Children’s TherAplay team in April 2010.

She graduated from Indiana University with a BS degree in Elementary Education and pursued her MS degree at Butler University.  She is a former teacher in the Indianapolis Public School System and the owner/director of a dance school in Carmel, IN.  She was also the artistic director of the Community Dance Foundation, Inc., a not for profit children’s dance company.  Both the school and the dance company allowed her the opportunity to teach, mentor and interact with children of all ages.

Diane serves as the Children’s TherAplay liaison between the clinic families and commercial insurance carriers, Indiana Medicaid and Children’s Special Health Care Services.

She is a member of the Indiana Chapter of AAPC and has completed an intensive billing course toward her CPB certification.

 

Toni Nelson

Toni is our resident global traveler. Prior to joining Children’s TherAplay in 2011, Toni spent a number of years in the travel and hospitality industry. Her career experiences took her, among other places, to Moscow and Singapore. In both these locations, Toni established and managed offices for RCI, the world’s largest timeshare exchange company. Until she learned conversational Russian, grocery store shopping trips typically resulted in “pot luck” dinners. Toni still loves surprises.

Following her tenure with RCI, Toni joined Christel House International, an international children’s charity and in doing so, was introduced to the not-for-profit world. While at Christel House, in addition to operations, Toni helped launch and manage fundraising, marketing, and public relations efforts.

Toni and her husband Bill built IRUS Stables in Lebanon, Indiana and operated it for 14 years. Toni’s respect for and knowledge of horses along with her passion for helping children and her professional experience help make her a great asset to the Children’s TherAplay team.

Judy began working at Children’s TherAplay as a horse handler in 2014. She is often heard saying, “I came because of my love for the horses, I stayed because of my love for the kids.” Judy joined the administrative team in December 2016.

In her spare time you will often find her at one sporting event or another cheering on one of her 12 grandchildren.

Katie holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Promotions from Purdue University.

Upon completion of her degree, Katie moved back home to the Chicago suburbs and dove head first into the nonprofit world. There, she spent two years helping provide food for kids in need through the Northern Illinois Food Bank child nutrition programs.

After relocating to Indianapolis for her husband’s work, Katie soon came to love her adopted hometown. An avid volunteer herself, she jumped at the chance to join the Children’s TherAplay team. 

Katie believes in early childhood health promotion, giving back, and finding happiness through helping others. In her spare time, Katie enjoys gardening/floral design and DIY projects, spending time with family and her dog, as well as lending a volunteer hand in her community.

And she thought she was going into museums! How she got from there into high-tech is an interesting but lengthy story. Suffice it to say that when she instead found herself with a front-row seat for the evolution of electronic learning, Shannon considered herself very lucky indeed.

She spent nearly a decade working with Cisco Systems to empower students in 115+ countries through Cisco Networking Academy, the world’s largest (and some say first) e-learning community. That theme continued when Shannon was tapped to develop curriculum and train for the Cisco Entrepreneur Institute.

She still gets geeked out about using technology to help others and, as a contractor for Children’s TherAplay, is delighted to have the opportunity to do just that.

Lauren joined Children’s TherAplay as a part-time horse handler in March of 2014 and was promoted to her current role in January 2018.

Lauren began riding horses at the age of 8 and competed in the Indiana Hunter/Jumper circuit into young adulthood. Spending years showing, training, and even being a groom at two Indiana racetracks, her love of working with horses never wavered. Although she still rides today, her focus is less on competition and more on keeping the equine team at TherAplay happy and healthy. Her own horse, Monster Mash, joined the TherAplay team in February 2018.

Graduating from IUPUI in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Business, Lauren dabbled with the idea of pursuing a master’s degree in social work. However, as attached as she was to her work with the horses and kiddos at Children's TherAplay, she chose to dedicate herself to the organization and stay on full-time. Lauren now leads the talented team of horse handlers, participates in outreach events, and thrives on the joyful challenge of caring the exceptional herd of horses at Children's TherAplay.

Jaime graduated in 1990 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Medical Professions / Occupational Therapy. She completed her graduate training in pediatric occupational therapy as a research fellow at OSU from 1991 to 1993 and went on to work for Easter Seals of Central Ohio and Allied Health Professions private practice, both in Columbus, OH. She became SIPT certified in 1996.

After Jaime moved to Indianapolis in 1997, she worked as a pediatric occupational therapist at Riverview Hospital with early intervention and Tri-County Education Co-op in outpatient rehabilitation.

In 1998, Jaime became an independent provider for First Steps of Indiana and, from 2000 to 2004, was employed in an independent contract position with Children's TherAplay. We were delighted to have Jaime return to Children's TherAplay as a PRN (as needed) contractor in 2011.

Jamie has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I Equine Skills and Treatment Principles.

Kaylin graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2013 with Bachelor degrees in Biology, Psychology, and a minor in Anthropology.  She continued her studies at Indiana University in Indianapolis where she obtained her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy in June of 2016 with academic honors and received a university-wide award for her civic engagement in the community during her time at IUPUI. She joined Children’s TherAplay in September of 2016 after completing her final clinical rotation here.

In addition to Children’s TherAplay, Kaylin continues to serve as clinical adjunct faculty in the Indiana University Occupational Therapy program, supervising occupational therapy students at the student run IU Student Outreach Clinic, a free medical clinic providing interdisciplinary care and services to the uninsured and underserved populations of Indianapolis.

Kaylin comes to Children’s TherAplay with a background and interest in inpatient rehabilitation.  In addition, Kaylin has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I and 2 Equine Skills and Treatment Principles.

Dr. Leah Van Antwerp joined the Children’s TherAplay Team as an occupational therapist in August, 2016. Leah’s passion for the Children’s TherAplay Foundation began in the waiting room while she watched her sibling’s therapy sessions. It continued during her graduate education when she completed a clinical fieldwork rotation here in the summer of 2015. In addition to treating the kiddos, Leah serves as the clinical education coordinator for occupational therapy students.

She holds a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Purdue University-Indianapolis and a master of science degree in occupational therapy and her doctorate in occupational therapy from Indiana University. Leah completed a Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Fellowship at the Riley Child Development Center. Leah guest lectures at the Indiana University Occupational Therapy Department.

Leah has completed both the American Hippotherapy Association Level I and II courses, as well as several other courses offered by the American Hippotherapy Association.  In addition, she has taken courses in kinesiotaping, reflex integration, vestibular dysfunction, and child development. She has more than six years of experience in working in pediatric adaptive aquatics and fitness and also practices aquatic occupational therapy.

Miss Arin joined the Children’s TherAplay team in September of 2016. She’s been an occupational therapist for seven years with experience in adult neuro rehab and early intervention. And she’s a cheesehead! At least she was for two years. Arin received her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Lacrosse. She has since been to Nicaragua twice on mission trips focused on serving those with special needs. 

Arin has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I and 2 Equine Skills and Treatment Principles classes.

Fun fact: Arin grew up in the upper Midwest and has the accent to prove it. Just ask about her home state of Minnesooooota or a "hot dish."

Teresa graduated from The Ohio State University in 1990 with a BS in Allied Health in Physical Therapy. She has specialized in pediatrics since the start of her career, working in both hospital and clinic based outpatient rehabilitation. She has been integrating hippotherapy into her treatments for 10 years.

Teresa’s specialty training includes Neuro Developmental Treatment Certification; the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level II Course; as well as advanced training in kinesiotaping, gait training, sensory integration, and dynamic bracing for pediatrics.

In addition to her experience and enthusiasm, Teresa brings AJ, a certified therapy dog through Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).  AJ is a three-year-old Lab/Golden cross who graduated CCI in 2016 and has been trained to successfully perform over 50 different commands to assist individuals with physical needs.

AJ works alongside our therapists to help children enjoy their therapy sessions even more.

Jackie graduated with her doctorate in physical therapy from Indiana University and completed her undergraduate degree in Biology with an emphasis on genetics at Purdue (Go Boilermakers!). 

Jackie has completed the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level 1 course and looks forward to completing Level 2 in the next year. Jackie has always had a passion for pediatric therapy, completing her final clinical rotation with First Steps.

Amy started working at Children’s Theraplay in August of 2017. Amy graduated from Purdue in 2008 (Boiler up!) and attended PT school in Chicago at Midwestern University.

She worked in adult and pediatrics for 4 years and switched exclusively to pediatrics in 2016 when her and her husband moved to Indianapolis to be closer to family and friends. Amy has a huge passion for helping kids meet their full potential. She is also First Steps credentialed.

Molly earned her master’s degree in physical therapy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and her PhD in movement neurosciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has worked as a physical therapist in Indianapolis,

Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Orange County, and even London, England.

Fun fact: Molly started riding horses when she was just five years old.

Get to know him: This horse is all heart. And while he’s endlessly gentle and steady with the kiddos, he also loves a good romp. It’s pure delight to watch him celebrate turnout  time by kicking up his heels and frisking around the pasture.

Get to know him: Before coming to Children's TherAplay, Zippy was a lesson pony next door at Lucky Farms and taught many children to ride. Though he’s small in stature, Zippy has a big personality.

Get to know her: This pony has a great deal of experience working with kiddos! Willow was a champion hunter show pony at Lucky Farms for many, many years. More recently, as a lesson pony, she’s helped young children learn how to ride.

    After relocating to Indianapolis for her husband’s work, Katie soon came to love her adopted hometown. An avid volunteer herself, she jumped at the chance to join the Children’s TherAplay team. 

    Katie believes in early childhood health promotion, giving back, and finding happiness through helping others. In her spare time, Katie enjoys gardening/floral design and DIY projects, spending time with family and her dog, as well as lending a volunteer hand in her community.

    And she thought she was going into museums! How she got from there into high-tech is an interesting but lengthy story. Suffice it to say that when she instead found herself with a front-row seat for the evolution of electronic learning, Shannon considered herself very lucky indeed.

    She spent nearly a decade working with Cisco Systems to empower students in 115+ countries through Cisco Networking Academy, the world’s largest (and some say first) e-learning community. That theme continued when Shannon was tapped to develop curriculum and train for the Cisco Entrepreneur Institute.

    She still gets geeked out about using technology to help others and, as a contractor for Children’s TherAplay, is delighted to have the opportunity to do just that.

    Lauren joined Children’s TherAplay as a part-time horse handler in March of 2014 and was promoted to her current role in January 2018.

    Lauren began riding horses at the age of 8 and competed in the Indiana Hunter/Jumper circuit into young adulthood. Spending years showing, training, and even being a groom at two Indiana racetracks, her love of working with horses never wavered. Although she still rides today, her focus is less on competition and more on keeping the equine team at TherAplay happy and healthy. Her own horse, Monster Mash, joined the TherAplay team in February 2018.

    Graduating from IUPUI in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Business, Lauren dabbled with the idea of pursuing a master’s degree in social work. However, as attached as she was to her work with the horses and kiddos at Children's TherAplay, she chose to dedicate herself to the organization and stay on full-time. Lauren now leads the talented team of horse handlers, participates in outreach events, and thrives on the joyful challenge of caring the exceptional herd of horses at Children's TherAplay.

    Jaime graduated in 1990 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Medical Professions / Occupational Therapy. She completed her graduate training in pediatric occupational therapy as a research fellow at OSU from 1991 to 1993 and went on to work for Easter Seals of Central Ohio and Allied Health Professions private practice, both in Columbus, OH. She became SIPT certified in 1996.

    After Jaime moved to Indianapolis in 1997, she worked as a pediatric occupational therapist at Riverview Hospital with early intervention and Tri-County Education Co-op in outpatient rehabilitation.

    In 1998, Jaime became an independent provider for First Steps of Indiana and, from 2000 to 2004, was employed in an independent contract position with Children's TherAplay. We were delighted to have Jaime return to Children's TherAplay as a PRN (as needed) contractor in 2011.

    Jamie has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I Equine Skills and Treatment Principles.

    Kaylin graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2013 with Bachelor degrees in Biology, Psychology, and a minor in Anthropology.  She continued her studies at Indiana University in Indianapolis where she obtained her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy in June of 2016 with academic honors and received a university-wide award for her civic engagement in the community during her time at IUPUI. She joined Children’s TherAplay in September of 2016 after completing her final clinical rotation here.

    In addition to Children’s TherAplay, Kaylin continues to serve as clinical adjunct faculty in the Indiana University Occupational Therapy program, supervising occupational therapy students at the student run IU Student Outreach Clinic, a free medical clinic providing interdisciplinary care and services to the uninsured and underserved populations of Indianapolis.

    Kaylin comes to Children’s TherAplay with a background and interest in inpatient rehabilitation.  In addition, Kaylin has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I and 2 Equine Skills and Treatment Principles.

    Dr. Leah Van Antwerp joined the Children’s TherAplay Team as an occupational therapist in August, 2016. Leah’s passion for the Children’s TherAplay Foundation began in the waiting room while she watched her sibling’s therapy sessions. It continued during her graduate education when she completed a clinical fieldwork rotation here in the summer of 2015. In addition to treating the kiddos, Leah serves as the clinical education coordinator for occupational therapy students.

    She holds a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Purdue University-Indianapolis and a master of science degree in occupational therapy and her doctorate in occupational therapy from Indiana University. Leah completed a Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Fellowship at the Riley Child Development Center. Leah guest lectures at the Indiana University Occupational Therapy Department.

    Leah has completed both the American Hippotherapy Association Level I and II courses, as well as several other courses offered by the American Hippotherapy Association.  In addition, she has taken courses in kinesiotaping, reflex integration, vestibular dysfunction, and child development. She has more than six years of experience in working in pediatric adaptive aquatics and fitness and also practices aquatic occupational therapy.

    Miss Arin joined the Children’s TherAplay team in September of 2016. She’s been an occupational therapist for seven years with experience in adult neuro rehab and early intervention. And she’s a cheesehead! At least she was for two years. Arin received her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Lacrosse. She has since been to Nicaragua twice on mission trips focused on serving those with special needs. 

    Arin has completed American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level I and 2 Equine Skills and Treatment Principles classes.

    Fun fact: Arin grew up in the upper Midwest and has the accent to prove it. Just ask about her home state of Minnesooooota or a "hot dish."

    Teresa graduated from The Ohio State University in 1990 with a BS in Allied Health in Physical Therapy. She has specialized in pediatrics since the start of her career, working in both hospital and clinic based outpatient rehabilitation. She has been integrating hippotherapy into her treatments for 10 years.

    Teresa’s specialty training includes Neuro Developmental Treatment Certification; the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) Level II Course; as well as advanced training in kinesiotaping, gait training, sensory integration, and dynamic bracing for pediatrics.

    In addition to her experience and enthusiasm, Teresa brings AJ, a certified therapy dog through Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).  AJ is a three-year-old Lab/Golden cross who graduated CCI in 2016 and has been trained to successfully perform over 50 different commands to assist individuals with physical needs.

    AJ works alongside our therapists to help children enjoy their therapy sessions even more.

    Amy started working at Children’s Theraplay in August of 2017. Amy graduated from Purdue in 2008 (Boiler up!) and attended PT school in Chicago at Midwestern University.

    She worked in adult and pediatrics for 4 years and switched exclusively to pediatrics in 2016 when her and her husband moved to Indianapolis to be closer to family and friends. Amy has a huge passion for helping kids meet their full potential. She is also First Steps credentialed.

Molly earned her master’s degree in physical therapy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and her PhD in movement neurosciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has worked as a physical therapist in Indianapolis,

    Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Orange County, and even London, England.

    Fun fact: Molly started riding horses when she was just five years old.

    Get to know him: He has been here at Children’s TherAplay longer than any other therapy horse, almost since the beginning of the program! As a versatile and sturdy mount, Gideon is a huge asset to our team.

    Get to know him: This horse is all heart. And while he’s endlessly gentle and steady with the kiddos, he also loves a good romp. It’s pure delight to watch him celebrate turnout  time by kicking up his heels and frisking around the pasture.

    Fun fact: Did you know horses can smile? Rocky does! He often shows his appreciation for a great neck scratch by flipping out his lips and  showing all his teeth in a big horsey grin.

    Get to know her: Our barn princess knows how to get what she wants using her good looks and charm. Don’t let her fool you though. She is a sassy girl at heart and loves being the boss.

    Fun fact: Fairy Tale has a talent that greatly impresses the kiddos. She knows how to “stand like a princess” and will pose with her front hoof lifted in the air.

    Get to know him: Before coming to Children's TherAplay, Zippy was a lesson pony next door at Lucky Farms and taught many children to ride. Though he’s small in stature, Zippy has a big personality.

    Fun fact: Zippy’s mom tells us that, when he was a youngster, this little pony enjoyed jumping so much that he would find things to jump in his pasture, just for the fun of it.

    Get to know him: He is one of two Haflingers in the barn. Moe is curious about everything and has fun playing in the pasture with his “Mini Moe,” Gideon.

    Fun fact: To the delight of the kiddos, Moe starred in an

    Get to know him: Padre’s sweet and conscientious personality makes him a great partner for our kiddos and the other horses. Two of Padre’s favorite pastimes are playing ball with Rocky and rolling around in the dirt to get as dirty as possible.

    Get to know him: Red stole everyone’s heart when he arrived as he is nothing short of adorable! He’s the perfect size for our smallest patients and is curious and gentle with the kiddos.

    Get to know him: A retired lesson horse, when Mikey joined the team he quickly became a great favorite with our kiddos as he is unfailingly patient, gentle, and trustworthy with them.

    Get to know him: His willing nature, mellow personality, and rock-and-roll mane and tail – a trademark of his breed – make Thor a favorite with all of us, especially the kiddos.

    Fun fact: The kiddos are so fascinated by Thor’s stripey mane that the therapists integrate it into on-the-horse treatment time, encouraging the kiddos to stretch forward and touch that big bold stripe!

    Get to know her: This pony has a great deal of experience working with kiddos! Willow was a champion hunter show pony at Lucky Farms for many, many years. More recently, as a lesson pony, she’s helped young children learn how to ride.

    Fun facts: Her registered name is “Tickles-’n’-Giggles.” And, amazingly enough, Willow belonged to the family of our 2017 summer intern, Cassidy.

    Horse hero stats: Monster Mash is the newest member of our herd. We’re delighted to partner with him in equine-assisted physical and occupational therapy treatments.

    Get to know him: This is Monster’s third career. After retiring from the racetrack, he showed on the Indiana Hunter/Jumper circuit with his mom (Equine Program Manager!) Lauren.
